Built Environment Project Workshop to Support and Work with Homelessness
EThekwini Municipality's Safer Cities and Urban Renewal Units together with Municipal Institute of Learning (MILE) hosted a virtual Built Environment Project Workshop to Support and Work with Homelessness on  04th of December 2020. ​

The aim of the workshop was to present an opportunity to gain insight into the concept of safe sleeping spaces and shelter for street homeless people. The workshop speaks directly to eThekwini Municipality and the City's vison and mission of being a caring and liveable city by providing relevant services to the homeless, whilst still supporting urban regeneration.

Dr Soobs Moonsammy from the City's Urban Renewal, provided the participants with the background and context of the workshop. She highlighted the six pillars of Social Development Strategy.

Jacquie Subban from SADC presented on the urban renewal safe sleeping spaces/projects informing the built programme for street homelessness. She underlined the Safe Sleeping Spaces in Land Use Management (need to comply with Spatial Planning and Land Use Management Act, Act No. 16 of 2013 (SPLUMA), facilitate the compliance with building, health and safety requirements in development).

The online workshop also focused on the strategic framework policy guidelines for street homelessness, drafting new/ challenging old planning, standards for sleeping spaces and shelter, the designs and costing that will guide budget.

Towards the end of the workshop participants were given an opportunity to discuss the informative presentation which enabled them to gain a better understanding of the project.
