MILE hosts first Webinar!

The local, national and international planning fraternity were given a platform to engage virtually during the Planning Disrupted Webinar which took place on 9 June 2020.  Designed to officially launch the ISOCARP Inner City Revival Plan and share pertinent findings from the publication, the event was a collaboration between eThekwini Municipality, International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP), SACN, SAPI, SALGA and MILE.

Facilitated by SACN, the Webinar created a platform for conversations on cities, inner cities – spaces of opportunity and inclusion. It brought together about 280 planning and built environment professionals, worldwide to discuss critical thematic areas pertinent to planning and prevalent during this crucial time of the Covid-19 pandemic which has disrupted planning … as we know it!
 
Milena Ivković, Director Urban Planning Advisory Teams and Member of the Board of Directors at ISOCARP spoke about the collaborative, international, multidisciplinary process. She focused on the inner city and Marina site and documented the many positive and negative characteristics.

“The area was dominated by cars and suffered from segregation. Going through decay and decline but great potential through the sea front. There is a need for social housing in the inner city. The main idea is to reinvent Durban as a happy, prosperous, walkable, and green city,” said Ivković. 

After the presentation by ISOCARP participants were led to the virtual breakout rooms which focused on the following thematic areas:

• Planning Practice in Times of Flux
• Dark Side of Planning Disruption 
• Reset Opportunity: Density and Land-Use Planning 
• Public Spaces as Life Line for Cities
• Relative and Supportive National Planning

Fruitful learnings were shared during the plenary session. Watch this space for the official report.
