MILE Facilitates at the SALGA Executive Management Team Lekgotla

Against this backdrop, SALGA and municipal managers gathered  at the IRENE Country Lodge on the 03-05 February 2020 to assess the state of both municipalities and SALGA to determine where both SALGA and local government would want to be. 

SALGA CEO, Mr Xolile George welcomed participants to the event, highlighting the key objectives of the theme. Re​-defining the Narrative, is to emerge with actions that we think will help in changing the narrative. Our role is to eradicate unresponsive service delivery,” urged George.

Lance Joel, SALGA COO presented on the state of local government stating the purpose, objective and expectation of the Executive Management Team Lekgotla. Joel also mentioned the developmental local government characteristics emphasising, local government is the key to building relationships between stakeholders, to find local solutions to increased sustainability.

“Despite the achievements over the last 25 years of democracy in South Africa, the current development trajectory is not delivering sufficient economic growth, social inclusion, spatial integration, and fiscal sustainability” said, Ms Mohanuoa Mabidilala, Chief Director: Monitoring and Evaluation at COGTA.
SALGA revised its 5-year strategic plan to assess the support provided to municipalities and what improvements should be made to support municipalities. Presentations where shared under the theme “re-defining the local government narrative” to enlighten municipal managers on how to reach their expected outcomes.  
 
Facilitated by MILE, the purpose of the event was for SALGA and municipal managers to reflect on the past performance and what improvements are required to establish current and future solutions. Ideas were shared through panel & group discussions. Municipal managers and SALGA will work together to achieve transformation of Local Government and improved service delivery.
