Knowledge Exchange on Sanitation Provisions in Dense Informal Settlements
Informal settlement upgrading, including provision of sanitation services, is a key mandate of local government. The challenging terrain in eThekwini, density, and unplanned nature of informal settlements pose constraints to delivery of these services. A number of innovative solutions (both technological and management models) are in development. With this in mind, MILE in partnership with Project Preparation Trust (PPT), European Union and eThekwini Municipality's Human Settlements Unit hosted a Knowledge Exchange on Sanitation Provisions in Dense Informal Settlements from 24-25 October 2019 at the Riverside Hotel, Durban.

The purpose of the knowledge exchange was to assess the current model of Communal / Modular Ablution Blocks in eThekwini and to begin to develop a way forward to improve the provision of sustainable and socially acceptable sanitation services.

It brought together various stakeholders from municipal officials, NGOs, academia, private sector and global partners to discuss and share knowledge on improving sanitation services in informal settlements.

Facilitated by MILE, the Workshop was officially opened by Dr Leon Chetty from the City's Strategic Office, representing EThekwini Municipality Senior Management, who welcomed participants to the Knowledge Exchange Workshop. "Let us work together to find solutions for our sanitation challenges," said Dr Chetty.

Mr Mark Misselhorn from iQhaza Lethu provided an introduction to the content of the Workshop. "The purpose of the workshop is to share knowledge and learning regarding informal settlements sanitation issues, options and solutions," said Misselhorn.

Participants spent the duration of the Workshop engaged in informative presentations, group exercises and facilitated discussion sessions.
