City Hosts Enforcement and Prosecution Workshop
Municipalities are good at developing policies and by-laws.  However they often fall short when it comes to enforcing these by-laws. In the spirit of knowledge sharing, enforcing policies and improving service delivery, MILE in partnership with KZN- COGTA and EThekwini Municipality’s Development Planning, Environment & Management Unit hosted a Workshop on Enforcement and Prosecution, from 7-8 February 2019 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
With about 100 KZN officials in attendance the learning event was officially opened by the EThekwini Municipal Academy Chief Learning Officer, Dr Mpilo Ngubane who welcomed officials to the Workshop and mentioned the importance of enforcement and prosecution in development management.
During the Workshop participants learned about the Context and Legislative Transition, Building Inspectorate Interventions, Reviewing Enforcement and Prosecution among other pertinent aspects of enforcement, through informative presentations by EThekwini Municipality's  Abdull Domingo, Senior Manager Enforcement and Daniels Pentasaib, Senior Manager Building Inspectorate.

The Workshop also featured talk by Wayne Jean-Pierre from Freedoms South Africa, a registered None Profit Organization (NPO) that assist people with the removal of their criminal records. Jean-Pierre spoke to municipalities about how the organisation helps communities who are not aware about legal matters.

Moving from theory to practice  the workshop included a  panel & open mic discussion which provided an opportunity for local government practitioners to engage and deliberate on key matters emerging from the workshop.

Officials left the event  empowered and passionate to use the knowledge that they have received to strive, share and implement learning's to the betterment of their municipality.

Municipalities were also given an opportunity to indicate the support they required in terms of enforcement and prosecution. MILE has acknowledged these municipalities’ needs and further engagements will be planned between them and the City.
