MILE and SALGA Free State Collaborate On Urban Strategic Planning
In order to improve service delivery, municipalities heavily rely on urban strategic planning for strategic direction. Furthermore, a Vision is used to guide municipal planning, budgeting, resource allocation, sustainable development, stakeholder consultation and policies. This process is crucial for municipalities in determining their strategic opportunities and challenges; and develop a strategic action plan.

In this regard, the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Free State partnered with MILE to host another Strategic Planning and Technical Support workshop from the 13th to the 15th of November 2018 at the University of the Free State. In attendance were officials and Councillors from various municipalities across the province.

These workshops are practitioner-to-practitioner based platforms focussing on various areas key for local government development. To date, several sessions on Small Town Regeneration have been convened. Furthermore, this workshop was conceptualised to respond to some key challenges that municipalities face.

In his opening remarks, Councillor George of Tokologo Local Municipality emphasised the importance of Urban Strategic Planning in municipalities. He also emphasised the need for champions to drive Urban Strategic Planning in order to ultimately improve service delivery.
