Course Overview


The course covers the following areas of solid waste management:

1. A strategic approach to solid waste management
2. Landfill Management
3. Education, Waste Minimisation and Recycling
4. Solid Waste Operations
5. New area management

Who should attend?

Whilst this Master Class will have appeal to directors and managers, it is predominantly designed for operational and technical staff working at a local government level. The course will be run in English.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this Master Class, participants should have:

  •  An appreciation of the importance of adopting a strategic management approach 
  • A deeper understanding of technical solid waste management operations 
  • Greater exposure to good practice on the continent and beyond 
  • Access to a range of learning networks, contacts and potential support around solid waste management

Fundamental Concepts and Learning Methodologies

Using the blended learning approach the Master Class will incorporate case studies, field visits, presentations, discussion and debates.

Duration of Master Class

The course runs over a period of THREE CONSECUTIVE DAYS.

Our Facilitator

Robert Abbu is the Deputy Head of Strategic & New Development at Durban Cleansing and Solid Waste and has worked in the council for eleven years.

Master Class Funding

In this Pilot phase, MILE will pay for morning and afternoon teas and all lunches during the Master Class, the cost of the venue, the time for all facilitators and contributors and for all the materials produced for the Course.

Participant municipality to pay for:

All accommodation, travel (air and ground) and subsistence allowances.
